At Frankfurt airport (Frankfurt Rhein-Main) there are now 2 railway stations (arriving by train). Trains to Mainz Hbf leave, either at the older regional (local) station in the basement ("level -1") of Terminal 1 (area "S"), or at the newer long-distance station, AirRail Terminal or area "T" (map). There is a direct access from Terminal 1 (Hall A, B, C) to the AirRail Terminal (level 3). From Terminal 2 (Hall D and E) both stations are reached via Terminal 1 (using Sky Line) or directly by a free shuttle bus. There is a Deutsche Bahn ("DB") counter at the ground level of Terminal 1 and at the top of the long-distance station, and a travel agency ("Reisebüro") at the arrival level of Hall B.
From the regional station direct local trains (RE and S-Bahn "S8" [ not "S9" *] with final destination Wiesbaden) frequently leave from track 3 for Mainz Hbf, which is reached in 20-27 minutes. You have to buy in advance a Verkehrsverbund ticket (at "RMV" vending machines) for € 4.65 (the code number for Mainz is 6500; don't take connections via Frankfurt Hbf). This ticket is good also for the local bus within Mainz. There is no possibility to buy tickets inside such trains and not having a valid ticket carries a € 60 fine. A detailled instruction on how to buy such a ticket can be found here.
[* S9 does not go to Mainz Hbf. If you have inadvertently entered such a train you can change trains (for Mainz Hbf) at "Rüsselsheim" or "Mainz-Bischofsheim" or you stay on until "Mainz-Kastel". Here, in front of that station (on the other side of the street) you can take a bus Nº 54, 55 or 68 - see below.]
From the long-distance station (track 6 and 7) non-stop IC/EC/ICE- trains take you to Mainz Hbf in 16-20 minutes. The regular fare for ICE and IC/EC trains is € 13.00 and € 9.00, respectively, with appropriate reductions, if you hold a Bahncard. Tickets can be bought at "DB" vending machines and counters, or in the train at some additional charge. However, there is generally only one train per hour heading for Mainz Hbf (usually leaving 58 minutes past the hour, cf. timetable).
Note, there is another international airport, Frankfurt-Hahn (HHN), which is situated in the Hunsrück some 70 km west of Mainz. Between Mainz Hbf and that airport there are several direct bus connections (Rhein-Nahe Bus, Bohr); the travel time is 70 min, the fare is 13.50 € (bus platform N in Mainz and bus stop 1 at Hahn airport). For alternative travel possibilities see bus destinations.
Your destination is Mainz Hauptbahnhof (Hbf) - see maps for the long distance and regional train connections. Inquire train schedules at DB Query Page
by long distance bus:
Recently, a (growing) net of long-distance bus connections has been established. Inquire schedules at Busverbindungen (in German). The long-distance bus stop is at Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring, close to Mainz Hauptbahnhof.
until December 10, 2016:
by local bus:
Leaving the Central Railway Station (Hbf) by the front exit turn to the right and you will find the bus departure platform F. There you can use the campus circle line, Nº 69 ("Campus Hochschule Mainz"), runnung from the railway station to the university campus (map) and back. The nearest stop for the MPI-P is "Duesbergweg". This bus runs somewhat less frequently during the university reccess (timetable 69). From the bus departure platform G you can also take the bus Nº 68 (destination Klein-Winternheim), that brings you to the stop "Hochschule Mainz" (formerly "Ackermannweg"). The regular ticket is € 2.75, which can be bought from the bus driver or from the vending machine. The latter also offers a bundle of 5 single tickets ("Sammelkarte Mainz/Wiesbaden") for € 11.00. Alternatively there are all-day tickets (€ 6.60 for 1 and € 9.90 for up to 5 persons). The tickets are valid in the whole Mainz/Wiesbaden area. If you arrive with an RMV or RNN Verkehrsverbund ticket, no extra bus ticket is necessary; if you carry a long distance DB ticket with the addition 'Mainz+City', you are entitled to use a bus within Mainz to your final destination.
Leaving the Central Railway Station (Hbf) by the west exit walk 100 m slightly uphill to the bus/tram station Hauptbahnhof West. There, all buses to the University and the MPI-P can be entered including buses #75 (destination Schwabenheim) and #650 (destination Sprendlingen) stopping at "Hochschule Mainz".
You can save some money by using buses Nº 54, 55, and 58 (destination Lerchenberg, Finthen, and Wackernheim, respectively) up to "Friedrich-von-Pfeiffer-Weg", where a "Kurzstreckenfahrschein" for € 1.65 is sufficient. However, you have to walk across the university campus for about 10 minutes.
The new tram line Mainzelbahn is the most convenient way to go from the Central Railway Station (Hbf) to the Institute. You can take Nº 51 and 53 (terminus Lerchenberg - Hindemithstr.) and (starting in spring 2017) line Nº 59 (terminus Hochschule Mainz). You can enter Nº 51 and 59 at area A and Nº 53 at area L in front of the station building. If you leave the station by the rear (west) exit and walk 80 m slightly uphill to the bus/tram station "Hauptbahnhof West", you can enter all three tram lines (and some buses, see below) at the same place. You should leave the tram at "Hochschule Mainz" (area E) with MPI-P a 2 minutes' walk across Koblenzer Str. and Ackermannweg away. The full network of trams and buses in Mainz can be found here.
The regular ticket is € 2.80, which can be bought from the bus driver or from the vending machine. The latter also offers a bundle of 5 single tickets ("Sammelkarte Mainz/Wiesbaden") for € 11.25. Alternatively there are all-day tickets (€ 6.70 for 1 and € 10,10 for up to 5 persons). The tickets are valid in the whole Mainz/Wiesbaden area. If you arrive with an RMV or RNN Verkehrsverbund ticket, no extra bus ticket is necessary; if you carry a long distance DB ticket with the addition 'Mainz+City', you are entitled to use a bus within Mainz to your final destination.
by local bus:
You can save money by using buses Nº 54, 55, and 56 (destination Lerchenberg, Finthen, or Wackernheim) up to "Friedrich-von-Pfeiffer-Weg". Here, a "Kurzstreckenfahrschein" for € 1.70 is sufficient. However, you have to walk across the university campus for about 10 minutes. At the Central Railway Station (Hbf) you can enter these buses either (using the front exit) at bus dearture area E or using the rear (west) exit walking 80 m slightly uphill to the bus/tram station Hauptbahnhof West. Here you can enter also the buses Nº 75 (destination Schwabenheim) and Nº 650 (destination Sprendlingen) stopping at "Hochschule Mainz" (area B), where, after crossing the Saarstr. via the pedestrian bridge, you will find MPI-P on the right.
Leave Autobahn A60 (regional map [71 kB]) either at exit Mainz-Finthen / Saarstraße or Mainz-Lerchenberg (local map [86 kB]) with direction "Innenstadt" (downtown), then follow "Universität" and "MPI-Polymerforschung" signs into Ackermannweg and turn left for the parking lot - see parking map. For GPS-guided navigation the coordinates are 49.98932 (north) and 8.23006 (east).
The fare from Mainz Hauptbahnhof is approximately € 14. Make sure that the taxi-driver brings you to the "Max-Planck-Institut für Polymerforschung", which is just outside the university campus, and not to the "Max-Planck-Institut für Chemie" (which is accessed via the university gate). Close to the Staudinger Lecture Hall there is a special area at Ackermannweg for taxi pick-up or drop-off (see parking map).
