The Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research

June 1st, 1983 The Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research is founded following a recommendation of the German Science Council (Wissenschaftsrat): an interdisciplinary institution of polymer research should be established in view of the importance of macromolecules in science, technology, and industry. The central thrust of the Institute is to be basic research in the field of polymeric materials. Professor Erhard W. Fischer and Professor Gerhard Wegner are appointed the founding directors, representing both physics and solid state chemistry of polymers.
1984 Scientific work at the Institute starts in temporary laboratories that are made available by the University of Mainz and by the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry which is also located on the University campus. Professor Hans Wolfgang Spiess joins the Institute as a director in the field of polymer spectroscopy.
1988 A first part of the Institute's permanent building on Ackermannweg on the edge of the University campus is completed. Fully completed the Institute consists of a working area of 10,000 qm.
1989 The fourth department, headed by Professor Klaus Müllen, is established for the field of synthetic macromolecular chemistry. Professor Kurt Binder, theoretical physicist at the University of Mainz, is appointed an external scientific member of the Institute.
1990 An extension of the building is finished.
1993 Professor Wolfgang Knoll is appointed the fifth director, working in the field of materials science.
1995 Professor Kurt Kremer is appointed a director in the field of polymer theory.
1997 Professor E.W. Fischer retires to the status of an 'Emeritus'.
1998 The building is completed including a lecture hall and a conference center, and laboratory space. Professor George Fytas, department of physical chemistry at the University of Heraklion, Crete, Greece, is appointed an external scientific member of the Institute.
2002 Professor Hans-Jürgen Butt is appointed the sixth director of the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Reserach. He herewith succeeds Prof. E.W. Fischer as a director for the Institute's Department of Polymer Physics.
2006 In October 2006, construction works for the new building finished and the new building is ready to move into. It offers 18 new offices as well as a special laboratory for the new NMR spectrometre.
2008 Professor G. Wegner receives an "emeritus" status at the institute.
2008 Professor Katharina Landfester is appointed director at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research. She takes over Professor Gerhard Wegner's former group "Solid-State Chemistry". The group is renamed "Physical Chemistry of Polymers".
2011 As the successor of the department "Material Science" the new research group "Molecular Spectroscopy", headed by director Prof. Dr. Mischa Bonn, starts its research work at the MPIP.
2012 Professor Paul W.M. Blom has been appointed new director at the institute. He is leading the newly founded research group "Molecular Electronics". In the latter part of the year, Professor Hans Wolfgang Spiess is retiring and remains emeritus and scientific member of the MPI-P.
